The McVansion

This page documents the build of our giant steel backpack on wheels!

We're still working on writing up all the random projects we've completed, so please subscribe (top right of the page) to be notified of any future blog posts.

Blank Slate – 2016 RAM Promaster 2500 High Roof
Why did we choose a Promaster?
  • Price: a new Promaster was significantly cheaper than a new Sprinter (almost half the cost)
  • Front Wheel Drive: not having a rear drive axle allows for a lower floor height, which gives the highest roof option a smaller overall height clearance than other models, plus improved vehicle handling
  • Availability: we managed to find a Promaster that fit our needs right on a dealer lot, without having to search through a ton of used vehicles with high mileage, questionable maintenance records, and damaged or already built out interiors
  • It's adorable. Just look at that face.

Behind-the-Scenes
Although the final result will be hidden behind aesthetic coverings, we threw a ton of time, energy, and money at nuking the problem of noise and heat transfer in the van. We layered up the following materials to get rid of all the “empty school bus barreling down a bumpy dirt road” clashing and echoing from the cargo area.
