Dishwashing Station

I have always hated doing dishes, even when I had the luxury of hot, soapy water at the flick of a finger. In the van, we strive to keep dishes to a minimum. Downsizing our kitchen has helped tremendously, as has keeping our meals relatively simple. Even so, it’s a little trickier to clean up after meals without a sink.

To make dishwashing easier, we use our Nemo Helio solar shower for water, a spray bottle filled with soapy water, Lunatec odor-free dishcloths (I LOVE these things, they changed my life!), and collapsible tubs to keep dishes out of the dirt. 3M broom holders and utility hooks help to organize our dishwashing tools for quick and easy access in the garage so we never have to spend time digging through the kitchen supplies to get what we need. Now even after a big meal, the whole process never takes longer than five minutes!

Lessons Learned: To increase efficiency, we use one tub to rinse, soap up, and scrub dirty dishes all at once. A second tub sits on standby. After all the dishes are scrubbed and soapy, we rinse each item one at a time and move the clean dishes to tub #2. The leftover soapy water goes into a cathole, the parking lot, or the nearest toilet, depending on where we’re at (we try to adhere to "leave no trace" as best we can) and clean dishes are dried off all at once and put back into kitchen storage.
